John Perrins "Gladstone Mandolin"
John already has 1 of our Mandolins, and he loves it!.
We told him about our new mandolin design and he has signed up for another one.
this one will be of a unique construction, using a different Bracing system with Carbon Fibre reinforcement.

John's Gladstone Mandolin
A Mandolin with 362mm Scale Length and 12 Frets to the body. It is a combination of Flat Top and Carved Mandolin design. The soundboard is semi-carved. The top is partially carved, but the underside is flat. Neck angle is set higher than a flat top instrument, but not as high as a carved one.
This Mandolin S/N Mando-TBWW004 was made by hand using the Materials and Processes listed below.
Back and Sides, Tasmanian Blackwood (Acacia melanoxylon)
One of Australia’s best-known Tonewoods, used both nationally and internationally. The curly or fiddle back forms can be visually stunning. The Back Bracing is a “Live Bracing Design “which increases the backs interaction with the soundboard during playing, resulting in a fuller more complex sound. The Bracing has been made with a 20ft Radius, which increases the stiffness and structural integrity.
Sound Board - Torrified Adirondack Spruce (Picea rubens)
Adirondack or Red Spruce is considered by many to be The Holy Grail of Soundboards. With too many desirable qualities to list all here. Just to mention a few, It’s louder with a higher ceiling volume, and more dynamic than Sitka Spruce and has less distortion when played aggressively.
Torrefication, makes the Tonewood less susceptible to changes in Relative Humidity and increasing the its resonant frequencies .
Soundboard Bracing – Gladstone Luthiers Carbon Fibre re-inforced design
The Bracing elements are out of laminated King Billy Pine.
Back Bracing – Modified live Bracing
The Back Cross Bracing elements are Sitka Spruce reclaimed from an old upright Piano.
Bindings - Black Gidgee, Headstock, Bridge and Fretboard - Ringed Gidgee
These two Tonewood are the same Species, just originating from different country, which gives them different colour characteristics.
Both have tight interlocking grain make which makes this species ideal for these applications.
Headstock Rear – Rare, California Redwood Burl
This is an iconic species, I consider myself privileged to be able to offer it.
Bridge Style – Adjustable Floating Bridge “Brekke Bridge”
An Ebony Floating Bridge with a height adjustable saddle. The height can be set using the supplied 1.5mm Allen Key.
Neck - American Curly Maple (Acer spp.)
We import this Curly Maple, one of the most popular woods for instruments. It is very stable and can be visually stunning. The Maple this neck has been cut, rotated, and rejoined effectively making it quarter sawn, increasing its stability and giving it that tiger stripe appearance. It is a three piece neck, the Spine is made from Burdekin Plum and has black/white maple accent veneers either side of it.
Tail Piece–Hand Made Gold Plated Brass
Tuners- Gotoh Baby 510 series.
