  • Irish Bouzouki History
Where the Mango came from.
We had the good fortune to be given a piece of historic Mango Tree. In the 1880s a Market Gardener in Gladstone planted a dozen or so Mango Trees. Most of these survived well over 100 years and have now been protected by the local council.
One of them was badly damaged in a storm and was destined for the chipper to be turned into mulch. A local Cabinet Maker managed to secure some of it.
Amongst it was a small piece that had intense curly/fiddleback figure, it was too small to be used for cabinet work, but he had heard of us and put it aside thinking he would one day give it to us. Quite a few years past and we eventually met and he produced this piece of Mango Tree. I have made these two Ukuleles and have enough for several more.
Its nice to know the history behind the wood.
