Quilted Maple Baritone
A Baritone Ukulele, scale length of 508mm, 14 frets to the body.
This Ukulele, serial No. Uke-AQM-003 was made by hand using the materials list below.
Back and Sides and Headstock Rear - American Quilted Maple (Acer macrophyllum)
Quilting is considered a growth/grain anomaly, it occurs in several Maple Species. It is visually stunning and certainly lives up to its name. The highest grade of quilted figure occurs in bigleaf maple. This set has a angular type of quilt pattern and a deeper gold colour than the average.
Back Bracing System - Live Bracing Design
The Live Bracing system has 1 less Traverse Brace than a standard, it has four radial braces that only support the centre of the lowerbout area are not connect to the instrument sides. This allows the back to move more than it would with standard bracing while keeping it stiff. The traverse braces are tuned by reducing their cross section in the centre of the brace. This system increases the backs interaction with the soundboard during playing, resulting in a fuller more complex sound. The Bracing has been made to fit a 20ft Radius, which increases the stiffness and structural integrity.
Soundboard - Engelmann Spruce (Picea engelmannii)
Engelmann is valued for its colour, tight grain, and light weight. Rarer than Sitka Spruce, often used in high end instruments.
Soundboard Bracing System – Falcate
The soundboard bracing system has been made to fit into and was assembled in a 20ft radius dish, which increases its stiffness and structural integrity. The Bracing is made of strips of King Billy Pine, laminated into sickle shapes, the gluing edges are radiused to 20ft. The Braced tops have been profiled/tuned. This radiused and curved symmetrical bracing system is of low mass and is incredibly stiff.
Headstock, Bridge & Fretboard – Ebony (Diospyros spp.)
Jet black, hard-wearing with a tight interlocking grain make this species ideal for these applications. Not all Ebony is Black. The Headstock on this Guitar has some dark striped Ebony. The Fretboard is bound with Ebony and has 1.5mm Paua purflings.
Bindings – Black Gidgee (Acacia cambagei)
This Black Gidgee came from a property near Isisford Central Queensland.
Fretwire – Jescar Evo-Gold
EVO Gold wire is a harder material than nickel silver though not as hard as stainless steel. It has excellent working properties and provides the player with increased fret life. The Fret ends have been individually spherically shaped and polished.
Neck and Bindings - Queensland Maple (Flindersia brayleyana)
Queensland Maple is one of the most popular woods for instruments. It is very stable and can be visually stunning. A 3-piece neck, with Curly Emu Apple Spine and a Volute transition between neck and headstock. The Neck is fitted with a Double Acting Steel Trussrod, accessible from the Soundhole with a 4mm Allen key. The Neck to Body Joint is a “Flat Bolt on Bolt Off” construction, having 2 x 6mm metal treaded inserts in the neck heel. The bolts are accessible through the Soundhole with 4mm Allen Key
Nut and Saddle – Hand made from Northern Territory Buffalo Horn
The 6mm saddle is a firm fit into the Bridge but can be removed if needed. It has a line scribed along the soundhole face; this indicates the orientation of the saddle in the bridge. The Nut has been slotted for 10-47 Strings. The Nut is also a firm fit; it has a small amount of CA glue holding it in place.
Rosette– A Ring of Timber Segments
A Ring of segments using Black Gidgee and Ringed Gidgee Heart and Sapwood.
Tuners – Gotoh Planetary Tuners in Gold & Black
Exceptional high-quality Tuners and recognized worldwide as such. With the 1:4 ratio planetary gear mechanism of the UPT/UPTL you can keep the classic look of traditional friction pegs without the slippage or need for tightening.
Strings – Living Water Custom Baritone Fluorocarbon Low G
Strings are an important part of any instruments sound structure. We have tested numerous different string types on our Baritone Ukuleles and found that the Living Water Fluorocarbon far outperforms any others, giving a warm/mellow Classical Guitar type sound.
Pickup – This Ukulele is Pickup Ready
An output Jack compensation block has been fitted in the lowerbout and the bridge has the required holes drilled in it for an undersaddle Piezo Element.
Finish - Hand Polished High Gloss Nitro Cellulous Lacquer
A hardwearing lacquer that is chemical resistant and easily repaired. Approximately 20 coats of Lacquer are applied over a 10-day period, after a week curing time, the lacquer is hand levelled using wet/dry sandpaper, micromesh pads and finally buffed to a mirror finish.
